This may read “out of the box” but guilt is an emotion tied strongly to lust. We hunger and crave to hold on to the things we ultimately will find useless. Guilt is within. It tears the core of our hearts. Thus, leading our demise and destruction. We want to let go but how can we? We feel a sense of comfort in our beliefs that both Hester and Dimmesdale are normal creatures with normal behaviors. Yes, their behavior is more common than we suppose. Most people can identify with these two characters because they are not honest. Lust is a hidden craving. We don’t express it openly. We just act it out. Kudos, to THE POET.

Ditto the flat, restrained conclusion, which could easily have been hysterical, fever-pitch.

If you care to, try the dead dogs poem at slate.com, December 4, 2007. On some days, I know that author fairly well.

Comment on Boris Johnson’s wrong-headed parable of the innocent banker by John Haynes http://www.blog.poet.me.uk/boris-johnsons-wrong-headed-parable-of-the-innocent-banker/#comment-436 John Haynes Tue, 30 Sep 2008 07:54:06 +0000 http://www.blog.poet.me.uk/boris-johnsons-wrong-headed-parable-of-the-innocent-banker.htm#comment-436 That is your interpretation rather than any reality. I would suspect that there is no more of a “parable” in this that if he wrote about porridge. The truth, as ever in life is rather more mundane one suspects:

Boris has a full time job as Mayor of London, he is attending the Conservative Party Conference and has a regular Tuesday slot to fill for the Daily Telegraph. As most experienced journalists, he will always have a “filler” story to hand for when circumstances and time presses.

Finally, unlike the “Ruth Kelly to Resign” story, Boris is unlikely to want to field a ‘distracting story’ during conference. Please do check under your bed. Oh you do, jolly good.

Comment on Paul Auster – Travels in the Scriptorium by Glenn Robinson http://www.blog.poet.me.uk/paul-auster-travels-in-the-scriptorium/#comment-397 Glenn Robinson Sun, 10 Aug 2008 15:22:50 +0000 http://www.blog.poet.me.uk/paul-auster-travels-in-the-scriptorium.htm#comment-397 Yes, I would agree with the above comments. Another aspect of this work that I would also like to highlight is the use of ‘imaginative reasoning’. It appears in other works of Auster, perhaps most successfully in Oracle Night. The creative ability to fill in the gaps…, not just in the processes of reading and writing but also in everyday life is extremely important. Auster seems to recognise that this has limited results however. Imaginative reasoning is not an epistemology but rather a more functional and useful ability that does not claim absolute knowledge or a God’s eye view. Such an ability is underdetermined and always open to revison but as such has an ethical component to it. It is more forgiving and empathatic and at moments sublime.
